Activities & Projects

Little Rapids Trail & Recreational Area

The St. Mary’s River Keepers, A Harbor Safety Committee is focused on improving access to the St. Mary’s River through the development of recreational spaces adjacent to the River.  The Committee has identified Island #1, Sugar Island Township as the site for the Committees next project. Entitled the Little Rapids Trail and Recreational Area, this project will seek to develop a small parcel of island immediately adjacent to the Little Rapids Cut in the St. Mary’s River.  The Committee is currently engaged in the planning process, especially in terms of project development and fundraising. The property is owned by the United States Army Corps of Engineers which adds another level of complexity, but we are dedicated to turn this space into a world-class, recreational opportunity.

To properly complete this activity, we will need the collective assistance from multiple levels of government and obviously, adequate financial and community support.  To that end, we will be reaching out for grants, advice, and guidance as we work through the processes.
